Gloss PPF is clear film that keeps paint shiny. Matte PPF is a low-sheen film that turns glossy paint satin or flat. Both absorb stone chips and heal light scratches, and film quality matters more than finish for durability. Matte needs wax-free, matte-safe care and cannot be polished.
Choosing between them is mostly about looks and upkeep, not protection. This guide compares the two finishes on appearance, maintenance, lifespan, damage and cost, and says which one suits which car.
What Is the Difference Between Matte PPF and Gloss PPF?
Both are paint protection film: a flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) layer that sits on top of the paint and absorbs impacts. The difference is the surface. Gloss film has a smooth topcoat that reflects light sharply. Matte film has a micro-textured topcoat that scatters light, which removes the mirror effect.
Shine is measured in gloss units (GU), a scale based on how much light a surface reflects compared with a black glass standard. The method is described in ASTM D523, which uses glossmeter angles of 20, 60 and 85 degrees. Most finish pages skip the numbers. Morthink publishes them: its CHARMIST Crystal gloss series reports above 95 GU, and its Matte & Satin series reports 23 GU, so the sheen is low but not flat black.

Satin sits between the two. It reflects less than gloss and more than full matte, and some brands sell all three.
How Do Matte and Gloss PPF Look on a Car?
Gloss film is meant to be invisible. It adds depth and clarity, but it shows whatever the paint shows, including swirls, orange peel and stretch marks, so paint correction comes first.
Matte film changes the car. A gloss black car under matte film reads as satin black, and body lines look sharper because reflections are muted. Matte film also hides fine swirls better than gloss.
Match the film to the paint:
- Gloss paint with gloss film: Invisible, the safe choice.
- Gloss paint with matte film: A removable color-style change. Done on the full vehicle, it looks consistent.
- Matte or satin paint with matte film: Preserves the factory finish. This is the correct pairing.
- Matte paint with gloss film: Adds unwanted shine and can leave glossy patches.
- Matte film on the front only of a gloss car: Creates a visible contrast line. Most installers advise against it.
There are two kinds of matte film. Clear matte (often called stealth) is transparent and changes only the sheen. Pigmented matte, such as Morthink's Matte & Satin color series, changes color and sheen together. Our color PPF guide covers the second type.
Is Matte PPF Harder to Maintain?
A little, and mostly in what you avoid. Both finishes need hand washing with a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfiber mitt, and both should skip automatic brush washes. The differences are:

Sources disagree on water spots. Some say matte hides them better, others say they are more visible on matte. Either way, dry the car after washing and avoid washing in direct sun.
Bird droppings, bug residue and tree sap should come off quickly on both finishes. One more rule applies to both: keep pressure washer nozzles away from film edges, because water forced under a corner starts a lift.
One installer says it plainly: matte film is not harder to maintain, it just requires the right products. We agree.
Does Matte Film Last as Long as Gloss PPF?
Usually yes. One page lists matte at 5 to 7 years and gloss at 7 to 10 years, but the same page's FAQ says both last a similar time with good quality and installation. Most other sources say finish does not change protection or lifespan, and one brand cites up to 10 years for gloss, satin and matte alike.
Our position: finish is not what decides durability. These do:
- Film thickness. Premium films are commonly 7.5 to 8.5 mil. Morthink's Matte & Satin series is 7.5 mil (190 microns).
- TPU type. Aliphatic TPU resists UV yellowing.
- Topcoat technology. It controls stain resistance and self-healing.
- Installer technique. Lifted edges and trapped dust usually trace back to prep and installation.
- Care. Harsh chemicals and brush washes shorten life on any finish.
The Matte & Satin series lists tensile strength of 15.0 MPa, elongation at break of 300% or more and a water contact angle of 100.5 degrees. Those are the numbers that show a film will stretch around a bumper and shed water. Weathering durability is usually tested with accelerated methods such as the fluorescent-UV approach in ASTM G154, so ask for the report behind any lifespan claim. Warranty terms vary by brand, and several premium films carry 10 years.
What Happens When Matte Film Is Damaged?
This is the real trade-off. Matte surfaces cannot be polished, because polishing adds gloss in patches. Light swirls and fine scratches still self-heal with warmth, since heat-activated topcoats work on matte films too, as the hydrophobic topcoat and self-healing guide explains. But a scratch that cuts through the topcoat does not heal, and you cannot buff it out. The usual fix is replacing the film on that panel.
Gloss film is more forgiving. A light polish can sometimes remove marks, and repairs blend more easily. If you want a finish that tolerates mistakes, choose gloss.
How Much More Does Matte Film Cost?
Slightly more, in most cases. Matte and satin films commonly cost 10% to 20% more than gloss, according to one guide. The reasons are manufacturing complexity, more detail work around trim and badges, and lower demand. Full-vehicle PPF typically runs from several thousand dollars in either finish. Our PPF cost guide breaks down the coverage bands.
Matte jobs are often quoted per vehicle after inspection. Ask for the film brand and series, panels covered and warranty in writing.

If you are unsure, start with gloss. It is removable, cheaper and forgiving, and you can still go matte later. If you already own a matte or satin car, the choice is made for you.

Where Does Morthink Fit?
Morthink makes its own film in a factory and sells through installers and distributors. Gloss clear protection is on the paint protection film page, and matte and satin finishes are available in the CHARMIST color range. Brands that want matte or satin film under their own name can look at the OEM and ODM program.
Matte vs Gloss Finish Questions People Ask Most
Is matte film harder to maintain than gloss?
Slightly. Both need hand washing with pH-neutral soap, but matte film must avoid wax, polish and gloss-enhancing sprays, which leave shiny patches. Use matte-safe cleaners and spot-clean fingerprints. Gloss can usually take sealants and light polishing. Matte is not difficult, it just needs the right products.
Can you put matte film on gloss paint?
Yes. Matte film over gloss paint turns it satin or stealth, and it is removable, so the original paint returns when the film is taken off. Do it on the full vehicle for a consistent look. A matte front end on an otherwise gloss car creates a visible contrast line.
Can matte film be polished or waxed?
No, not safely. Polishing and waxing add gloss, and on matte film they leave shiny, uneven patches that are hard to reverse. Light swirls can still heal with warmth, but a deep scratch cannot be buffed out and usually means replacing that panel's film.
Does matte film last as long as gloss PPF?
Usually yes. Finish does not change protection, and quality films of either type are commonly rated up to 10 years. Thickness, TPU type, topcoat and installer skill matter more than sheen. One page lists shorter life for matte, but its own FAQ contradicts that, so check the warranty.
Is matte film more expensive than gloss PPF?
Usually a little. One guide puts matte and satin at 10% to 20% above gloss, because of manufacturing, installation detail and demand. Many installers quote matte per vehicle after inspection. Compare itemized quotes that name the film brand, panels covered and warranty, not just the total.
